It's School Library Month! Wahoo! Okay...obviously it's been School Library Month for a bit, but my school was on Spring Break the first week, so for me it feels like it just started this week. The last two years I've had a couple of stations or contests for students, but I wanted to go a bit bigger and have more options this year. I was also trying to find some ways to tie in more hands on options and/or Makerspace esque activities while fitting in with this year's theme from AASL. (You can get cool graphics like the one below and find out more about their theme and ideas fro this year at their SLM site.) the stations I casually brainstormed a lot about what the stations would be over break and looked around social media and AASL for ideas too. (To be honest, I spent way too much time trying to narrow it down. I am great at finding and brainstorming ideas but sometimes struggle with picking one.) You can see a slideshow of the ideas below. Also if you'd like to download the PowerPoint copy of it to edit or have, you can get it here. Display and stations set up I also set up a display Monday, which again guess what, I was good at brainstorming ideas but struggled to narrow it down. I ultimately decided to focus on books that connect to readers (books with important books within it, that emphasize libraries or people who like books), connect to people (books about various types of relationships with valuable lessons), connect to causes (A Long Walk to Water was our school/Global Read Aloud this year and other non-fiction books on issues), and connect to poetry (April is also National Poetry Month.). Here is a copy of the slides I designed using Canva for the display. And see a few pictures of the display and my stations all set up and ready to roll for tomorrow morning below! (I didn't post a picture of the survey station. It's just the slide in a stand like the one on the slide show above. No other setup needed there.) I tried to find a balance that worked for me between coming up with choices I thought would be good for my school and not overdoing it. Some of these activities I've done before (i.e. the window prompts and bookmark contest). Some I had resources laying around but hadn't gotten to try (i.e. black out poetry). Some are new things to try (i.e. Strawbees and Keva, Makerspace design contest). How it's starting out How have the first two days gone? It's gone over great overall. Some stations are definitely more popular than others, but it also varies a lot from class to class. The book recommendation one sadly seems to be the least popular. The Makerspace design contest, bookmark contest, blackout poetry, Strawbees, and Keva planks have all been popular. The survey and window prompts are in the middle. But I've only seen 5th graders so far, so other grades could be completely different; we'll see!
